Mars Expedition 2100 @ London Design Museum

Immersive exhibition

The year is 2100 and you have been chosen for an interplanetary mission. The Mars Expedition 2100 experience explores a possible future in which humans are colonizing Mars – the first step towards becoming multiplanetary – and presents visitors with a narrative from the perspective of a scientist astronaut trained to help build the initial colony on the Red Planet. Mars Expedition 2100 is part of the Moving to Mars exhibition, wich have tooked place at the Design Museum London, and runned from October 2019 to February 2020.

Mars Expedition 2100 is an immersive experience presented as part of the Moving to Mars exhibition at the Design Museum London, on view from October 2019 to February 2020, exploring a possible future in which humans begin the colonization of Mars. Mars Expedition 2100 is an immersive experience created by SuperUber in partnership with Thomas Ermacora, using large-scale projection to place visitors in the role of a future astronaut and prompt reflection on life beyond Earth and the challenges of building a multiplanetary future.

“The proposal is to make visitors feel like an astronaut of the future and reflect on what it would be like to leave planet Earth behind and the importance of building a multiplanetary future”, says Russ Rive, co-founder of SuperUber. “We also invite the public to reflect on how to survive, thrive and generate inputs necessary for basic existence, such as food, housing and reproduction,” says Russ.

Mars Expedition 2100 also raises questions about what the anatomy of human beings in the future will look like, how to transform Mars and create a habitable atmosphere and how the babies’ bodies will develop there. “The main message of the experience is that when we think about the importance of exploring another planet, we start to care more and live better on ours”, says Liana Brazil, creative director and cofounder of SuperUber.

The Moving to Mars exhibition investigates one of humanity’s greatest current challenges – the mission to create a permanent colony on Mars, and features other immersive environments, including contributions from NASA, the European Space Agency and SpaceX, in addition to around 200 objects , like the first map of the surface of the Red Planet, the first sustainable urban project for Mars, the first space suit designed for the surface of Mars, and Christopher Raeburn’s new fashion collection inspired by that planet.
